Left Center Right is a fast, easy dice game for 3 or more players. Roll the dice and pass your tokens left, right, or into the center. The last player with tokens wins the whole pot.

Quick start

  1. Each player takes 3 tokens: quarters, dollar bills, whatever you like.
  2. On your turn, roll 1 die per token you have (3 max).
  3. LEFT: move 1 token to the player on your left.
  4. RIGHT: move 1 token to the player on your right.
  5. ★: move 1 token to the center.
  6. Dot: keep it.
  7. The last player with tokens wins everything in the center.

That’s the game. The rest of this page has the details.

What’s in the box

  • 1 folding maple and leatherette case with the rules engraved inside
  • 3 dice

Tokens aren’t included. Most people play with quarters or dollar bills, and leaving them out keeps the game small enough to slip into a pocket or bag. Pennies, poker chips, or candy work too.

Your board

Unsnap the case and open it up. Inside you’ll find:

  • Three dice pockets: the dice store here when the case is closed, so they don’t rattle around.
  • A cheat sheet: what LEFT, RIGHT, and the star mean, plus “Each player takes 3 tokens” and “Roll 1 dice per token (3 max).” Leave the board open on the table and you won’t need this page again.

The dice

Each die has 6 sides:

  • 1 LEFT: move 1 token to the player on your left.
  • 1 RIGHT: move 1 token to the player on your right.
  • 1 star (Center): move 1 token to the center pile.
  • 3 dots: do nothing. You keep that token.

Set up

  1. Sit in a circle. Open the case where everyone can see it and take out the dice.
  2. Each player puts 3 tokens in front of them.
  3. Leave a spot in the middle of the table for the center pile (the pot).
  4. Each player rolls 1 die. The first to roll a star goes first. Play then moves to the left (clockwise).

How to play

  1. Count your tokens. Roll 1 die per token, up to 3:
    • 3 or more tokens: roll all 3 dice.
    • 2 tokens: roll 2 dice.
    • 1 token: roll 1 die.
  2. Do what the dice say. Handle each die one at a time: LEFT, RIGHT, star, or dot.
  3. Pass the dice to the player on your left. Their turn.

Example turn

  • You have 3 quarters, so you roll all 3 dice.
  • You roll LEFT, ★, and a dot.
  • Move 1 quarter to your left, 1 quarter to the center, and keep the last one.
  • Next turn you only have 1 quarter, so you roll just 1 die (unless someone passes you more before then).

Out of tokens? You’re not out

If you have no tokens, skip your turn and pass the dice on. Stay at the table, though. The players next to you can still pass tokens to you, and then you’re rolling again on your next turn.

Winning

The game ends when only one player has any tokens left. That player wins everything in the center and keeps their own tokens too. A game usually takes 5 to 15 minutes.

Packing up

Press the dice back into their pockets, fold the case closed, and snap it shut.

Tips and house rules

  • More players, bigger pot: there’s no upper limit. 3 to 10 players is the sweet spot.
  • Raise the stakes: play with dollar bills instead of quarters.
  • Play again: the winner goes first in the next game.
  • Just for fun: no money? Use anything you have three of per person. It plays exactly the same.
