How to Play Five Dice

Five Dice is a classic dice game of strategy and luck. It is played using the same rules and scoring commonly associated with the game Yahtzee. Players roll five dice to make scoring combinations, choosing the best category each turn.

What you’ll need

  • 5 standard dice
  • 2 or more players
  • A way to keep score
(Use our Five Dice scoring page to track categories and totals)

Objective

Score the most points by filling in all scoring categories. The game ends after each player has taken 13 turns.

Set up

  • Choose a player to go first; turns proceed clockwise.
  • Each player uses their own score sheet or the online scoring page.

How a turn works

  1. Roll all five dice.
  2. You may set aside (“keep”) any dice you wish.
  3. You may re-roll the remaining dice up to two additional times.

You may roll a maximum of three times total per turn. You may stop early and score at any time.

Choosing a category

After your final roll, you must choose one scoring category and record your score.

  • Each category may be used only once per game.
  • If you cannot or choose not to score a category, you may enter 0 in any unused category.

Scoring categories

Upper section

Score the total of the dice showing the selected number:

  • Ones
  • Twos
  • Threes
  • Fours
  • Fives
  • Sixes

Upper section bonus: If your total in this section is 63 points or more, score a 35-point bonus.

Lower section

  • Three of a Kind: Total of all five dice
  • Four of a Kind: Total of all five dice
  • Full House: 25 points (three of one number and two of another)
  • Small Straight: 30 points (four consecutive numbers)
  • Large Straight: 40 points (five consecutive numbers)
  • Five of a Kind: 50 points (all five dice the same)
  • Chance: Total of all five dice

Tip: Many players keep the scoring page open on their phone to quickly total scores and track categories.

Five-of-a-kind bonus (optional standard rule)

If you roll an additional Five of a Kind after already scoring 50 points in that category, many players award a 100-point bonus each time.

If you choose to use this rule, your score sheet should include a place to record these bonuses.

Ending the game

The game ends after all players have completed 13 turns.

Add together all scores, including any bonuses. The player with the highest total score wins.
