How to Play Cornhole

Cornhole is a classic tossing game where players aim to land their pieces on a raised board or through a hole to score points. This travel version uses discs instead of traditional bags, making it compact and easy to play anywhere.

What you’ll need

  • 2 cornhole boards (travel size)
  • Discs (usually 4 per player, in two different colors)
  • 2 players (or 2 teams)

Set up

  • Place the two boards facing each other on a flat surface.
  • Space the boards an agreed distance apart (shorter distances work well for travel play).
  • Each player or team chooses a color and takes all four matching discs.

Objective

Score points by tossing your discs onto the board or through the hole.

How to play

  • Players take turns tossing one disc at a time toward the opposite board.
  • All discs are tossed in a round before scoring.
  • Players alternate throws, starting with the same player each round or alternating rounds by agreement.

Scoring

  • 1 point for a disc that lands on the board and stays there
  • 3 points for a disc that goes through the hole

If a disc is knocked off the board during play, it does not score.

Cancelation scoring

After all discs are thrown, compare scores for the round:

  • Only the difference between the two players’ scores is awarded.
  • For example, if one player scores 5 points and the other scores 3 points, the higher-scoring player earns 2 points for that round.

Winning the game

  • Players continue playing rounds until one player or team reaches 21 points.
  • The winning score must be reached exactly, unless players agree otherwise.

Travel play notes

  • Because this version uses discs, throws tend to be faster and more direct than bag tosses.
  • Adjust the distance between boards to suit your space and skill level.
  • House rules are common — feel free to adapt scoring or distance for casual play.
