How to Play Aggravation

Aggravation is a classic race game played with marbles and dice. The goal is to move all of your marbles around the board and safely into your home area before your opponents.

This game is also known in some regions as Wahoo or Tock. While similar to other race games, Aggravation is played entirely with dice and marbles.

What you’ll need

  • An Aggravation board
  • Marbles (usually 4 per player)
  • Dice (typically 1 or 2, depending on house rules)
  • 2–6 players

Set up

  • Each player chooses a color and places all of their marbles in their starting area.
  • Each player’s home area is the row of holes leading off the main track near their start.

Objective

Be the first player to move all of your marbles from the starting area, around the board, and into your home area.

Starting the game

  • Players take turns rolling the dice.
  • To move a marble out of the starting area and onto the board, a player must roll a 1 (or another agreed starting number).
  • If a player cannot move, their turn ends.

Once a marble is on the board, it may be moved normally on future turns.

Moving marbles

  • On your turn, roll the dice and move one marble forward the number of spaces shown.
  • Movement follows the main track in a clockwise direction.
  • You may choose which of your marbles to move if you have more than one in play.

Landing on other marbles

If your marble lands on a space occupied by another player’s marble:

  • The opponent’s marble is sent back to their starting area.
  • This applies to all shared spaces on the main track.

Sending another player’s marble back to start is what gives the game its name.

Safe spaces

  • Starting spaces and home areas are considered safe.
  • Marbles on safe spaces may not be sent back to start.

Entering the home area

  • Once a marble completes a full circuit of the board, it may enter its home area.
  • Marbles must enter the home area using an exact roll.
  • Marbles already in the home area may continue moving within it.

Winning the game

The first player to move all of their marbles into their home area wins.
